Marrakech: where the trip gets loud and delicious

Come for Marrakech first

Marrakech is already a compelling trip on its own: Jemaa el-Fna, riads, souks, terraces and the nightly shift from sightseeing to eating. Morocco’s tourism office specifically describes Jemaa el-Fna turning into a giant open-air restaurant after dark and highlights the city’s souks as a dense, sensory shopping experience.

It is also an easy place to encounter spices, olives, amlou and argan products in one famous city, then decide whether any of those flavors are interesting enough to pull you farther across Morocco.

Marrakech as the delicious first chapter

Do not treat everything sold in Marrakech as a Marrakech product. Treat the city as the place where Morocco puts a lot of its food culture in front of you at once. Taste first, notice what keeps appearing, then follow the story toward the coast, the Souss or another region if it captures you.

If you only want Marrakech, that is a perfectly good trip. If the Atlantic sounds better after a few days in the medina, Essaouira is the natural next change of pace.
